Position Description Job SummarySaint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a driven, talented, and energetic research engineer to join our growing Surfaces and Polymeric Materials team. We are searching for an experienced, hands-on project leader to investigate, research, and develop new technologies that strengthen our offerings. The new team member will have the opportunity to leverage their engineering and materials expertise by leading their projects from the initial stages of conceptualization, prototyping and experimental testing, to the implementation in manufacturing. Projects will focus on process and product development activities and follow a Gate-based methodology with a focus in design/change control.The selected candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, application engineers, external customers, and external suppliers. The candidate will create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats.As part of the Surfaces and Polymeric Materials group, the successful candidate will: Manage and document projects effectively without supervision by a technical leader. Solve complex technical problem by combining literature search, scientific knowledge and hands-on experiments. Develop experimental approaches, execute experiments, collect data, and analyze results within the context of materials, structure, and property relationships. Use advanced tools to generate and analyze large data sets to identify and model underlying trends. Demonstrate open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility. Communicate technically with internal competencies and university collaborators to advance projects and identify productive synergies. Stay aware of technologies and advancements in current scope of work. Identify, evaluate and integrate novel analysis techniques Specify and implement new equipment and capabilities for projectsTravel (up to 15%) may be required for customer visits, plant and field visits, and technical meetings or conferences.Competencies required: Ability to work safely and proactively contribute to a positive safety culture. Work openly and collaboratively across multiple research groups in a multicultural environment. Proven project leadership experience including project management, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills are required and necessary to communicate with the plant, with customers, and to report progress on projects. Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience. Demonstrated knowledge in HSE. Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required. Autonomous execution is expected. Perform a gap analysis and need assessment for their technical area; develop short term deliverable list and an addressable roadmap that is in line with business strategy. Determine & execute IP, industry & scientific literature watch strategy. Identify and develop relationships with strategic partners such as universities, suppliers, or external firms. Coordinate knowledge sharing and communication across R&D teams and between functions (R&D, business, manufacturing, purchasing, etc.)Required Qualifications BS degree with a minimum of 7 years of experience, MS with 3+ years of experience plus demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments, or an entry level PhD in Material Science, Plastics/Polymer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other related disciplines with demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments, project leadership, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills. Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and ability to interpret and draw conclusions from experimental data. Demonstrated good knowledge in HSE and IP. Experience with polymeric materials, material characterization, and surface science are required. Experience with material interaction with biological systems, biomaterials, and associated characterization methods (e.g. microbiology, fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy) is a plus. Laboratory experience in the areas of surface modification, surface chemistry, and rheology is a plus.
