Job Description:
Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative Liquid
Metal Battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a
Mechanical Engineer to be a contributing member of the Ambri System
Engineering team. The position requires working collaboratively
with other engineering disciplines to design novel solutions to
complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri's
Liquid Metal Battery technology. The individual in this role will
be called upon to be an innovative problem solver, provide
technical leadership, work cross functionally, and communicate
effectively with others within and outside the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Design and validate thermal management systems (cooling,
exhaust, air circulation, internal heating, external heating, etc).
May include design, selection and/or management of contractor
development of custom high-temperature fluid-flow equipment scaled
for use in Ambri systems
- Design and integration of thermal management systems into Ambri
system structures
- Apply highly specialized mechanical knowledge of engineering
principles and practices specifically for energy storage
applications, including battery cell module/tray design, system
design and associated electronic assemblies
- Lead or support in the creation and development of new product
designs from prototype to production considering application, cost,
weight, performance, thermodynamics, reliability, durability,
manufacturing, assembly, and field serviceability
- Communicate the capability of a system-level design concept to
internal and external stake holders to ensure requirements are met,
including assessment of alternative and competitive design
concepts, and lead the development of system-level
requirements
- Obtain input and lead negotiation with cross-functional and
cross-discipline technical experts and designers to communicate
complex subsystem and system-level designs through the entire
design process into production
- Coordinate the development of design verification and system
validation plans to manage risk and evaluate analytical and
experimental test results to verify that new product designs meet
internal technical requirements and validate that design solutions
meet customer requirements
- Design 3D CAD components and assemblies, 2D drawing creation in
Solidworks including thermal constraints (material selection,
cooling, insulation, fan selection, etc.), electrical systems
(busbars, wire routing) and enclosures used for the battery cells
and modules, taking into account all functional, material, thermal,
regulatory and cost requirements
- Applies knowledge of Systems Product Validation to identify
system capability and risks through the use of Design Failure Mode
and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) in the execution of processes such as
Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation
Consideration Checklist, Design Review and utilize tools including
Dimensional Variation Analysis (tolerance stack-up), Geometric
Dimensioning & Tolerancing, CAD, CAE analysis tools (thermal and
structural) to enable high quality subsystem and system-level
design decision making and executing design refinements
- Support and manage outside resources as required, examples
would include managing specialized outside consultants to obtain
seismic analysis certificates for product approval for use in
various earthquake zones
- Utilizes experience with Product Failure Mode Avoidance to
mitigate potential failures for complex systems and manage
improvement
- Define and execute system and component level Design
Verification Plan and Report for battery enclosure design and
performance verification
- Responsible for making CAD design and engineering changes to
existing designs in production
- Use experience with component selection in working directly
with suppliers and AME to ensure their parts meet system
requirements Requirements:
- BSME degree required
- 5+ years of mechanical product design
- Experience designing with refractory ceramics highly
preferred
- Experience in furnace design, incinerator design or other
high-temperature fields designing heating and cooling systems
preferred
- Experience with mechanically integrating systems together for
high power application (1 to 5MW range) preferred
- Demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills
- Must have excellent English written and oral communication
skills
- CAD 3D component and assembly design and 2D drawing
creation
- Proficient with SolidWorks preferred
- Demonstrated ability of working within a team and independently
to achieve results
- Experience working with battery energy systems is a solid
plus
