Job Description:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will serve as an innovative and mission-driven leader to move the organization to the next level of fundraising and donor support. She/he will work closely with the chief executive officer and the board of directors to foster an engaging culture of philanthropy across the organization. The CDO is responsible for leading, developing, and implementing a strategic and comprehensive development plan to include robust corporate and individual donor support, major gifts, and planned giving. The CDO will lead the Development Department staff of five, serve as a member of the Company Senior Leadership Team, and serve as the primary contact for the Board 's fundraising activities. Additionally, the CDO will maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects while working collaboratively with the Senior Management Team, Board, and development team to chart a fundraising plan that maximizes the upcoming opportunity of Company 's 150 th anniversary. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Build programs to increase philanthropic income from individuals, foundations, corporations, and faith-based groups to support Company 's funding priorities. Maintain and manage a portfolio of $10,000+ major donors and prospects in ways that have a quantifiable impact on Company 's contributed income. Provide high quality staff support to Company 's President & CEO and key Board volunteers to ensure that they are well prepared for all fund-raising related phone calls, meetings, and events. Work with the Senior Leadership Team and Board, help to build compelling cases to support the organization 's fundraising priorities, and design and implement a program to leverage Company 's 150 th anniversary and maximum fundraising opportunities associated with it, including a major fundraising campaign. Oversee and guide the major gifts, bequests, annual giving, grants, prospect research, gift processing, donor tracking, reporting, engagement, and stewardship programs, as well as recognition and cultivation events and strategies, ensuring that all are conducted at the highest level of quality. Strategically develop new prospects through proactive research, outreach, and engagement. Serve as the primary staff support for the Board Resource Development Committee, and for other Board committees and Task Forces, as appropriate, that are created to advise and support Company 's fundraising efforts, engaging new prospects in these committees and Task Forces whenever possible. Serve as the primary Development staff support for the Leadership Development Committee and help to identify and cultivate, as appropriate, new Board members and design and implement a Board orientation program for new members. Partner with the Strategic Marketing and Communications team to develop print and electronic collateral as well as a social media plan designed to complement the fundraising program and help it to achieve its goals. Provide effective motivation, mentoring, team building, and professional development opportunities for the development staff, as well as relevant volunteers, to help strengthen performance and drive goal-oriented outcomes. Manage a team of 5-6 staff, establishing expectations for performance of direct reports to ensure all aspects of the fundraising program function optimally. Identify, hire, and orient well-qualified department staff; provide timely performance evaluations; and work collaboratively with Human Resources in addressing job performance issues. Engage in active team building and leadership of the development department staff to foster effective and collaborative work in meeting department goals and activities. Ensure stability by creating a working environment that is rewarding to staff and volunteers. Establish performance metrics as appropriate for Development roles and the department in total. Perform all other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor 's Degree required, Master 's or other advanced degree preferred. Minimum of eight to ten years of development experience, including at least three years supervising, training, and coaching development professionals. Membership in a professional fundraising association is preferred. Enthusiasm for and commitment to Company 's mission. Demonstrated experience with all aspects of development '" grant writing, event management, legacy gifts, and corporate giving with a special expertise in individual donor solicitation and major giving. An independent and results-oriented leader with an established record of accomplishment in growing and expanding fundraising efforts. Experience identifying, cultivating and soliciting support from individual donors who are not directly impacted by the organization 's work. Demonstrated experience working effectively and collaboratively with the board of directors and relevant board committees. Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills; an ability to be a thought-partner with highly skilled program leadership to develop fundraising strategies to support Company 's work. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Superb organizational, supervisory and interpersonal skills. Ability to work both independently, without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the agency including as a member of the executive team. Proficient in Microsoft Office and fluent with fundraising software. Access to a personal vehicle and a current driver 's license; the position involves travel across our New England geography. Effectively manage detailed, complex concepts and problems and make rapid decisions regarding management and development issues. Establish strong and appropriate relationships with key stakeholders at all levels both internal and external to the organization. Ability to plan and meet established timelines. Ability to adhere to the highest ethical standards in management, governance, and fund development. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include extended work days with some need for weekend work. TRAVEL: Requires travel throughout the New England states where Company is located.
