The new Master of Science in Health Informatics represents our next step.

The School of Healthcare Business seeks an innovative and entrepreneurial candidate to join our faculty on the Worcester, MA campus, and serve as Assistant Dean for Health Informatics and Technology. This position is a full-time faculty appointment with a rank commensurate with experience. The primary teaching assignment is in the Masters of Science in Health Informatics Program (MSHI), including clinical informatics, information management, and health data analytics. In addition, the incumbent carries an administrative appointment within the School of Healthcare Business, leading the MSHI and collaborating with the Dean to support the growth and development of the school. The incumbent will report to the Dean of the School of Healthcare Business and assume an active role in serving on committees and conducting scholarship and service to support the school and our programs. This position is located on the Worcester MA campus but does allow for flexibility.
Teaching Responsibilities
* Deliver high-quality didactic instruction in the classroom and/or the online environment using Blackboard as the student learning management system* Create opportunities for students and other members of our community to feel connected, respected, accepted, and valued in the learning space and curricula* Provide professional mentorship and academic advisement to MSHI students through special events, office hours and/or scheduled appointments* Challenge existing biases and disparities that serve as barriers to success in coursework, leadership, and professional development for students* Develop and refine the program curriculum, including courses, syllabi, and practical assessments of learning outcomes across levels* Teach with innovative and contemporary approaches, including testing and evaluating new methods, seeking updated texts and readings, and developing new or progressive assignments* Evaluate and interpret assessment data continuously, leading to recommendations for improvement in teaching and learning that is aligned with school and program learning outcomes* Engage actively in scholarship commensurate with assigned faculty rank and in support of the health informatics program, school, and University* Participate in school and university-wide committees, including the school curriculum committee, academic standing review, and others as assigned* Represent the school, informatics program, and the profession to external audiences, including potential students, parents, employers, and industry partners.* Support incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion into the curriculum, as well as co-curricular experiences, to broaden the education of students and expand their knowledge of health disparities.

Administrative Responsibilities


  • Provide leadership and direction for program and course development in informatics and other health technology-related areas
  • Collaborate with the Dean and Senior Director of Program Operations to secure staffing, plan courses, evaluate faculty, perform quality assessment of coursework, and disseminate policies
  • Oversee adjunct faculty under the direction of the Dean and ensure that high-quality didactic instruction of MSHI coursework occurs in the classroom and/or online environment using Blackboard as the student learning management system
  • Ensure continuous assessment and improvement activities are carried out, consistent with CAHIIM accreditation requirements and University policies for the MSHI program, and participate in school, program, and University-wide assessment activities
  • Collaborate with school faculty, staff, and University administrative offices to ensure academic advising is thorough, coordinated, and timely
  • Establish connections with the University community, including prospective employers and external collaboration sites;
  • Co-coordinate the Informatics and Technology Advisory Board with the support of the Dean and the school;
  • Support professional development and engagement opportunities for students, including the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMMS) and American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) college affiliation and other opportunities
  • Participate in school and department meetings, University ceremonies, and other significant events, delivering updates and providing summaries as necessary


    Additional teaching and administrative responsibilities may be assigned
    Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

    A doctorate in health informatics, computer science, or related;
    AHIMA Certification (CCS/CCA/RHIA, etc.) or qualified to obtain certification;
    Experience with professional accreditation, CAHIIM preferred;
    Five years of full-time teaching experience
    Experience with cultural and social needs of graduate students, including first-generation students
    Ability to work individually and as a member of a professional team, establishing strong working relationships across campuses and external collaborators
    Evidence of teaching excellence and academic innovation
    Ability to work independently and effectively interact with various parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents, including healthcare industry professionals).
    Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience teaching online and at the doctoral level;
    Clinical informatics expertise, or expertise in informatics in healthcare delivery;
    Demonstrated experience with healthcare technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation;
    Expertise in teaching technological applications;
    Willingness to participate in international travel to support SHB travel seminars.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Use of a computer to conduct classroom instruction, record sessions, and attend meetings with students, staff, and administration;
    • Ability to participate in and produce self via videoconference, or other university-provided means
    • The incumbent must be able to travel to campus regularly;
    • Must be able to utilize technology in teaching and delivering education, including recording lectures, posting videos, and using the LMS and tools provided for grading and giving feedback to students.
