Position Summary: Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and/or LIP (licensed independent practitioner) and in keeping with unit specific standards, provides patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients; and assists members of the health care team. Position Qualifications: All internal transfers and all new hires to this position must obtain a CNA or Certified Medical Assistant credential administered by a recognized school which is accredited by the Department of Health or must have ARMA registration (includes a program outside of hospital or UMassMemorial's PCA orientation program and employed in this capacity for minimum of three years). One of these credentials must be obtained no later than six months from date of transfer or date of hire. If certification is not obtained within six months of hire/transfer, the employee will be terminated, or employee may bid on an Inpatient PCA job (should an opening exist).* Minimum of a high school education or GED required.* One of the following is required:* Prior inpatient experience or acute care training or equivalent, or* Nursing student who has completed at least one clinical rotation, or* One-year experience as a PCA I - inpatient and has completed all unit based competency requirements* Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification required.* Minimum of one year of administrative duties in a clinical setting preferred.* Medical Terminology and computer skills preferred.License/Certification/Education:Required:* Minimum of a high school education or GED.* ARMA registration (includes a program outside of hospital or UMass Memorial's PCA orientation program and employed in this capacity for minimum of three years), or* Current CNA and/or Certified Medical Assistant certification from a qualified program is required, and one of the following is required:* Nursing student who has completed at least one clinical rotation, or* One-year experience as a Patient Care Associate and has completed all unit based competency requirements,* One-year experience in an equivalent role to a PCA.* Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification from the American Heart Association is required.Experience/Skills:Required:* Must be able to read, write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.* Must utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanics in all work-related activities.* Must have strong interpersonal skills to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the clinic and provide exceptional service to patients.* Must have proven interpersonal skills to provides respectful, culturally and age appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors and others.* Must have proven problem-solving abilities for routine situations and requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.* Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.* Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs by acting as a source of information and approaches all interactions with the intention of building positive rapport and relationships. Preferred:* Minimum of one year of administrative duties in a clinical setting preferred.* Medical Terminology and computer skills preferred. Major Responsibilities:* Escorts patient to examination rooms. Takes and records vital signs and EKG's. Assists physician and others in clinical procedures as required or directed. Performs other basic clinical procedures such as venipuncture and measuring and recording patients' height and weight as directed.* As an integral member of the patient care team, serves both internal and external customers including patients, nurses, physicians and other colleagues who support the delivery of care and services.* Provides clear, timely communication to the R.N., L.P.N. and/or L.I.P. regarding observations and changes seen in patient.* Assists in moving, lifting, positioning and transporting patients by utilizing fall prevention alternative devices/strategies as directed, and following the Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient. Utilizes proper safety techniques and body mechanic in all work-related activities.* Performs EKG's, phlebotomy, performs Point of Care (POC) tests, according to hospital standards. Collects, labels and prepares specimens for transport to lab. Performs selected unit specific procedures such as checking status of unit equipment, cleaning equipment between patients and proper storage of supplies.* Sets up/prepares rooms based on patient care requirements. Assists R.N., L.P.N. and/or LIP (licensed independent practitioner) in performing routine physical examinations by preparing patient equipment and supplies. May assist physician, nurse or others with clinical procedures such as, but not limited to lumbar puncture, pelvic examinations, and/or dressing changes. Assists in the setup, maintenance, disassembly and cleaning of patient equipment.* Assists with patient admissions, transfers and discharge procedures.* Replenishes patient and clinic supplies and equipment.* Utilizes a variety of electronic informational and patient care systems.* Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.* Maintains logs, organizes patient care chart, and/or maintains medical records. May data enter or retrieve medical information from the electronic medical record systems* Participates in quality improvement initiatives.* Complies with center-wide policies and with nursing department and clinic based policies, procedures, and guidelines.* Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and clinic changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to UMMHC e mails on a regular basis. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:* Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.* Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.* Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.* Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.* Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.* Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.* Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
