Senior Supervising Attorney for Housing Unit

Company: Community Legal Aid & Affiliate
Location: Worcester
Posted on: November 19, 2021

Job Description:

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 140 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities. CLA seeks a Senior Supervising Attorney (SSA) to join its management team and oversee the work of its housing practitioners in Worcester County. The SSA will work out of CLA's Worcester Office and will supervise the legal work of housing advocates focused on eviction defense, fair housing issues, and access to affordable housing programs. This supervision will include co-counseling cases, editing pleadings and briefs, preparing attorneys for and observing them in court, and engaging in regular case reviews. The SSA will also assist with coordinating the training of staff and be responsible for relationship-building with local partners, including the Housing Court's Central Division. In addition, the attorney will work with CLA's Managing Attorneys in conducting annual performance reviews of staff, and will assist in writing grant applications and reports. CLA is looking for a candidate who can work collaboratively with CLA's existing Housing SSA (who works out of CLA's Springfield office and will be responsible for the direct supervision of CLA's western Mass. housing practice) in managing CLA's organization-wide housing practice. The candidate should be someone who is committed to developing and coordinating systems to ensure that CLA's Worcester County housing team is properly supervised and supported. The candidate should be an independent thinker and have the ability to calmly and thoughtfully work with a housing team that works in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment which can often be stressful for advocates. The candidate should have substantial housing experience, but also be someone who is comfortable acknowledging the limits of their knowledge and seeking support and advice from others as needed, as CLA has many attorneys and paralegals on staff with decades of experience in housing law. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule required. Must have at least seven years experience as a housing attorney, with significant experience in eviction defense and subsidy programs. Experience with low-income populations; ability to work collaboratively; and strong supervision and communication skills required. Salary DOE. Liberal fringe benefits package. Please submit cover letter and resumes to: , or mail to Alicia Vaughan, Human Resources Director, Community Legal Aid, 405 Main Street, Worcester, Massachusetts 01608. CLA is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strives to ensure that our staff members reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. CLA encourages applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
