Protection Policy & Support and IEC 61850 for our Protection,
Control, Metering, & Telecomm Engineering organization. This role

can request a reasonable accommodation.Job PurposeThe Engineering
Manager will lead and support a team of highly technical engineers
in the Protection Policy & Support and IEC 61850 New England
department. The Protection Policy & Support function contributes to
the development of technical policies, guidelines, and standards
related to protection and control systems. This includes, but is
not limited to, disturbance analysis and field support, Substation
Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and remote fault record
retrieval, and providing support for NERC/NPCC audits and
investigation of all transmission and substation disturbances on
the National Grid New England System. This role will also lead and
direct the IEC 61850 engineering function to support the Company's
vision of a digital substation leveraging current IEC 61850
standards. This includes, but are not limited to, developing and
maintaining applicable standards and associated documentation,
evaluating commercially available equipment and technologies,
developing training material for engineering and operations
organizations, managing the simulator lab, coordinating with key
stakeholders across the Company, collaborating with industry and
vendor contractors, and supporting capital work on IEC 61850
projects in New England.Key Accountabilities
- Make authoritative technical engineering recommendations in
order to support team members and provide innovative solutions
which have a positive impact on business performance in the short
and longer term
- Work with management stakeholders to identify and implement
business process improvement and best practices in a consistent
manner; and remain abreast of changing environments
- Communicate progress and status of projects to key stakeholders
with regular cadence.
- Ensure team deliverables are timely, feasible, fit for purpose
and of superior quality
- Promote philosophy of safe working to team employees
- Recruit, motivate and develop a technical team in order to
inspire innovation, commitment and engagement and improve long term
performance
- Lead, motivate and develop the team, allocate resources and
provide necessary training and coaching to develop a
performance-based culture and ensure results are delivered in line
with expectations and business objectives
- Provide team leadership to ensure that organizational goals are
communicated to the team and that group direction is consistent
with corporate strategy, direction and growth objectives
- Support team members to ensure their effective development to
meet their personal aspirations and future business needs
- Work in a Matrix environment and promote team effectiveness by
providing technical guidance and coaching, communicating
expectations to the team
- Represent the Company on industry organizations and groups,
regulatory interactions, vendor, and customer facing
engagements
- Monitor advances in protection and control and develop
strategies for the future
- Review and evaluate technical specifications of protection
systems and recommend technical design and process
improvements
- Responsible for the development of standards for the protection
and control systems for transmission and distribution substations
and switchyards
- Responsible for the development of protection
strategiesSupervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
- Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and
ability to interact with company personnel.
- Strong leadership skills.Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Engineering or Engineering Management from an
ABET accredited engineering school required, Master's
preferred
- Registered Professional Engineering License preferred with 6+
years of professional development in the protection engineering
field
- 8+ years of in-depth experience within the Gas & Electric
energy delivery or utility sector required
- Experience in protection and control, IEC 61850, network
engineering, and/or power systems engineering field(s)
preferred
- Experience creating new ways to plan and operate the electric
supply and distribution systems using advanced analytics, emerging
technologies, and industry trends.
- Ability to manage small and large projects, working with
external group resources, scheduling, and delivering results.
- Ability to prioritize work and be a team member on multiple
projects at one time
- Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history
that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy
- Detailed and specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of
protective relay systems
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting
protection
- Knowledge of National Grid operational policies and procedures,
decision making authority etc.
- Familiarity with Primavera, Microsoft Office products,
Powerplant, Cascade and SAP and MicroStation
- Proven capabilities managing effective complex projects and
teams
- Familiarity with IEC 61850 & associated standards, IEEE/ANSI
Standards, NESCand National Electrical Code (as applicable)
- Valid Driver's License to facilitate travel, as necessary,
across USservice territory
- Able to travel across all US geographical regions as
